A forecast, not a promise
Aurora Tonight applies published rules to public forecasts of space weather and weather. Geomagnetic storms arrive early, late or not at all, and clouds move faster than any forecast: a yes is a good chance, never a guarantee of seeing aurora. The site is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated for NOAA, the National Weather Service, NASA, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute or any other agency. Travel, driving at night and time spent outdoors in cold weather are your own decisions and risks.
Data and their owners
SWPC and National Weather Service data are works of the US government in the public domain. Cloud data outside the United States come from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence; they are used unmodified, except for averaging over the hours of a night. NASA POWER climatology and Census Bureau Gazetteer files are public. Land outlines come from Natural Earth, in the public domain.

Governing law
French law applies; failing an amicable settlement, the courts of France have jurisdiction. Updated: 2026-10-13.
Forecast, not a promise: the Kp forecast is issued for three-hour blocks and storms arrive early, late or not at all; clouds move faster than any forecast. The answer is a rule applied to public data, explained on the method page, and it is for guidance only: it does not replace the official SWPC alerts or your own look at the sky.
